PORT
ALLEN ENTRANCE FEATURES
The City of
Port Allen has recently completed the first construction stages
associated with its comprehensive Entrance
 |
 |
Improvement
Program. In anticipation of substantial future riverfront development,
the Program´s purpose is to create significant visual entrance
features into the City from the Interstate 10 and LA Highway
1 corridors. Additionally, the Project is a principal element
within the City´s Greenways Program, the objective of which
is to further pedestrianize the community and provide a ccess
to key educational, governmental and retail institutions as well
as additional passive recreational features. The southern entrance
feature represents an important pedestrian node between the Depot
Restoration Project on Highway 1, Rivault Park and the Port Allen
Locks, to the south. The Entrance features have been designed
to symbolize and celebrate West Baton Rouge Parish's rich agricultural
legacy (northern feature) and Port Allen's maritime / nautical
heritage (southern feature).
Several neighborhoods
now enjoy lavishly landscaped entrances or gateways, complete with decorative
signage, and, in some cases, ornamental street lighting.
As with all of Port Allen's inter-related programs and initiatives, the Entrance
Improvement Program underscores the City´s commitment to developing a comprehensive
urban design plan for its downtown and residential areas. The Project demonstrates
the belief that cost-effective, high-quality design for public buildings and
spaces will improve the identity and image of the City, which, in turn, will
elevate community pride and encourage private investment.
